The world of technology moves incredibly quickly, and in recent years the use of software in business has grown dramatically. Increasingly sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms and cloud-based computing are now beginning to transform not just where we work but – crucially – how we work.
4 Ways Software is changing the world
Business software that was previously only affordable to large corporations is now very much within reach of small, independent companies. As well as saving money, these platforms make businesses considerably more agile and able to react quickly to changing market conditions and customer needs.
1. Cloud-based storage and processing
The use of cloud-based solutions for storage and processing is now commonplace in most industries. Desktop and laptop systems integrated with cloud platforms allow remote teams of workers to work from any location where they have an internet connection. With most modern cell phones allowing mobile internet connections to be shared over devices via Bluetooth technology, staff can work from almost anywhere.
Indeed, the use of standalone mobile apps has also increased. Modern cell phones are more powerful than the computers that took a man to the moon, however, even in the unlikely event a mobile device can’t handle tasks, there is always the option to use remote processing on powerful connected, cloud-based servers.
Remote working also allows staff to be more proactive and productive. Shared files mean employees can work collaboratively, updating documents on the move without having to return to the office.
2. Video conferencing and VoIP
To aid the transition from the traditional office to the virtual workspace, our use of video conferencing and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) systems has also increased. With video platforms like Zoom, it’s possible to hold meetings of up to 100 people (500 people on the commercial version) negating the need for your employees to return to the office. Users simply agree a time and log into their private meeting room.
3. Wages and payroll
Of course, the virtual office and remote working are all well and good, but the core functions of your business go on, and your staff still need to be paid. AI software is incredibly efficient at performing repetitive tasks and can be used to automate paying wages. The majority of employees are on a fixed salary with fixed deductions, which can be calculated automatically by payroll software. Furthermore, if you integrate payroll apps with your banking software, you can ensure employees get paid on time, every time.
4. IT on a grander scale
By outsourcing IT to a qualified service provider, even smaller companies can take advantage of advanced IT systems at a fraction of the budget traditionally associated with installing their own servers and networks. Perhaps more importantly, the maintenance and administration of these systems are all handled by the provider, saving your company both time and money. This is IT on a grander scale, the type that was previously only accessible to larger corporations.
The future
The recent emergence of Coronavirus forced companies to address remote working and look at ways to reduce costs and overheads. As this trend continues, the software is undoubtedly going to play a far more significant role in how we work in the future.
The considerable advances in AI are leading to more automation in business processes and are transforming the workplace forever.
